"Beyond the Years" is about music. It's about love. It's about choices that affect people's destiny.
According to historical essays, pansori is a traditional Korean music. It usually features love stories. It often takes hours to complete. But in Im Kwon-taek's movie, the music being played is melancholic in tone.
"Years" is about Dong-ho's search for his blind stepsister. A pansori drummer by profession, he'll search for her more than once. As kids, they were raised in poverty by a pansori master. Dong-ho left because he got tired of it. His departure would affect their lives and the ones they would crossed paths (or get into a relationship) through the years.
What touched me is the lovely shots of the Korean countryside. It's majestic, but it feels lonely to be observing it (or even savoring the view). Perhaps it's a reflection of Dong-ho's life and his stepsister. Furthermore, as some essays suggest, some things are better appreciated through sight and hearing. This is what "Years" achieved. |
