DOC Team Bridging the Cultural Divide in India

Through out all of my travels over the years I have learned some very important lessons.  In order to bridge the cultural divide you first need to identify common interests and or goals.  While bringing over 20 high school students from Canada to India in order to film this documentary certainly has its challenges, the goal was to first put the young filmmakers at ease with their new surroundings and subjects.  There are many ways to do this, but I have found the easiest way is to connect individuals from different cultures through the arts and culture.  read more »

The DOC Team arrived in Udaipur India a week earlier then the students. The DOC team was made up Scott McPherson, Fanny Malo, and myself. Both Fanny and Scott are in film school. We arrived a week early in order to finalize the stories the youth had developed back in Montreal.

Young filmmakers earn their stripes on the streets Udaipur India

I just recently returned from India. Where I was running a program for Nokia, International Youth Foundation and Free the Children, the program is called Directors of Change This programs mandate is create youth produced documentaries that are then integrated into the curriculum of Canada school boards across the country.  Each student is also outfitted with a Nokia N95 mobile video camera so they can document their own experience, as well as produce a film showing their behind the scenes struggle.  read more »

Filmmaking trip to India - 20 Students from Montreal venture to India in February.

As many of you may or may not know, I am also Executive Director for a program called Directors of Change, which is a Nokia, International Youth Federation and Free the Children initiative. Pangea Day was an international multimedia event conducted on May 10, 2008. Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro were linked to produce a 4-hour program of films, music and speakers. The program was broadcast live across the globe from 1800 to 2200 UTC, culminating in a global drum circle, symbolizing the common heartbeat of the world. According to the festival organizers, "Pangea Day plans to use the power of film to bring the world a little closer together."  read more »

4 OF 4 - Mobile Filmmaking - Editing

All right people. By this time you've shot your film and are now sitting down to plot out and edit your film.
Whether you are using a Mobile Phone or Personal Computer? The film is made in the edit. But no amount of editing can correct poor camera work. Be ruthless!
Here are a few things to remember when editing:
Upload all of your footage at once, and review it. When laying out your timeline, remember that it is necessary to advance the plot.  read more »

Here are a few tricks and techniques to bear in mind, in order to get the most from your mobile video phone.

Small Screen – Big ideas.
Just because you're filming it on a small screen, doesn't mean that's how it's always going to be seen. So don't let it limit your ambition - think big.

In the frame
Avoid wide shots, and try and keep your characters close, and in the centre of the screen, especially when using a mobile video phone.
